Note: This post is from October 2013, but these movies are great until the end of time!
As you may remember from this post – I am in Halifax for the weekend spending quality time with one of my best gals S and celebrating Halloween with some Halifax friends. Curious as to what I’m up to? May I suggest stalking my Instagram?
Because I’m so organized this week – I wrote this post LAST weekend, just for you. Because the weekend before Halloween is made for watching Halloween movies or in many cases – those movies that just make Halloween even better.
So in no particular order (although, that’s a lie – the first is my MUST watch Halloween movie every year) I give you the top 5 Halloween movies you’ve just got to watch around the
holidays, I mean Halloween. Because Halloween IS a holiday in my green eyes.
And I’m willing to bet this list isn’t as predictable as you might think. Hint: Hocus Pocus or Ernest Scared Stupid aren’t on it!
1. Rocky Horror Picture Show
This movie is one of my all-time favorites – any time of year – but it’s particularly great around Halloween. In fact, the best Halloween playlists must include the Time Warp, Sweet Transvestite, and Toucha Toucha Toucha Touch me. And, Magenta is one of my favorite characters to dress up as for Halloween. Been there, done that, three times – I’m a pro.
2. Ghostbusters 1 or 2
Nerd alert, I am a HUGE Ghostbusters fan. This dates back to childhood, when I had a Venkman action figure. I can’t make this stuff up. Anyway, the Ghostbuster movies are great any time of year, and while a lot of people have a hate on for the sequel, I love it just as much as the first one. Vigo the Carpathian scared the living shit out of me as a child. You don’t get much scarier than a creepy painting of a dude who can then come out of said creepy painting and come at you.
3. All of the Halloween Movies
Scream was my first horror movie. I remember that night like it was yesterday. I was thirteen and with my best friend, there was a party-size pizza (we were too terrified to even eat) and my mom and dad wanted to watch the first fifteen minutes before we did to “approve it.” They, of course, had rented it on our behalf. Somehow, they weren’t phased enough by Drew Barrymore getting butchered to death in the opening sequence to keep us from watching it and thus began my love of horror movies. THANKS MOM & DAD. Needless to say, it’s a must in October.
5. Psycho (the Hitchcock Version)
Lastly, I am a HUGE Hitchcock fan, in case you hadn’t already picked that up based on last years Halloween costume, but Psycho is my annual must watch Halloween movie EVERY year. Not only is this the perfect creepy movie, it has one of the best Halloween theme music scores of life. So go a little mad and give Psycho a watch this weekend. Norman and his mother are waiting on you.
So in closing, if you had plans for this weekend, you should really just cancel them and take in a viewing of all these great classics. And yes, Scream came out half a lifetime ago for me, so I’m deeming it a classic.
Until next week!
